Registered dental hygienists (RDH) are professionally trained clinical health care providers who provide preventative oral care, treatment, oral health education and health promotion. RDHs are regulated health professionals who practice in public health or private practice and are a key part of the dental team.​​​

Oral hygiene procedures performed by RDHs include:

  • scaling and polishing teeth
  • providing fluoride treatments​
  • providing oral hygiene instruc​tion and counseling

Training Schools for Dental Hygienists in BC

​A diploma in dental hygiene is required for an individual to work as a dental hygienist in BC. Please note: a bachelor degree in dental hygiene is NOT required in British Columbia.
