Becoming a Dentist
The University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry offers degrees in the profession of dentistry (DMD – Doctor of Dental Medicine).
Dentists, as highly trained, skilled professionals, are the leaders of the dental team within the dental office. The dentist is the only member of the dental team qualified to diagnose and treat dental disease and will perform procedures including:
- dental restorations (fillings, crowns, etc)
- endodontics (root canal)
- periodontal (gum) treatment
- dental prosthetics (dentures, bridges, implants)
- oral surgery (extractions, etc.)
- cosmetic dentistry
Dentists may delegate to hygienists or certified dental assistants certain procedures that they are qualified to perform under the dentist's supervision.
